I know, these aren’t trailers, but you could say that posters are trailers for the deaf and lazy. Regardless, I really wanted to post these. Notice anything familiar? A city with an animal symbol etched in the layout. That’s real original guys. And it’s not just that either, these films are based on sources that are decades old! Come up with some new ideas Hollywood!

Joking of course, I can’t wait.

Skyfall (2012)

We’ve been teased a lot today. First by Ron Burgundy, now by James Bond, and I’m definitely excited. But that’s surely what you’d expect when two of the most manly men in cinema tease you like this. Let’s just say, neither have disappointed on a purely spoiler based level. While Anchorman has yet to film, Sam Mende’s turn at the helm has been shooting for a while so there are plenty of shots taken from the final movie in this ‘teaser’. The brilliant thing though, is that it really doesn’t give a lot away.

You get a glimpse at some of the big sequences, and anybody frightened of riding the London Underground or a fan of the Final Destination series will want to avoid, but for the most part it’s a genuinely well put together preview. My only criticism is that I didn’t come away from it thinking I’d just seen a Bond movie. Daniel Craig will do a great job I’m sure and Judi Dench adds another ‘M’ performance to the CV, but I hope this isn’t a move away from what the franchise is and a step further into stylised action thriller territory. All too early to tell though, so until then I’ll keep my fingers (figuratively) crossed.

Anchorman: The Legend Continues (2013)

What’s to say about this other than it’s a small slice of what to expect next year? I love that they did this, knowing that the film isn’t even ‘written’ (the first one was largely improvised, and the better for it) they simply got the gang together to film a little scene and reminded us what made it so great; the cast. One final thing though; is it me or is Brick… slightly off? Still incredible though.

The Campaign (2012)

Why do some people hate Will Ferrell? Really, is there a specific reason? Yes, he plays the same sort of character in many of his movies, but have you seen them? They’re pretty funny. Anchorman is one of the most quoted films in cinematic history. When a character is that interesting why would you not want to see more of him? The Campaign follows this trend, albeit tweaking his character to seem a lot more like republican bore Mitt Romney, so I guess we can expect more of the expected.

Now, a little treat for you; while I can’t confirm this as fact, I’d say the likelihood is pretty high that this video is the source for Zach Galifianakis’ character Marty Huggins in this movie, including the Pugs! I’ll link up the whole series that came from in a separate post, such is my love of the series which is soon to hit Comedy Central in the US. I literally cannot wait. As you may have noticed, they share many common mannerisms, and this could be Zach’s most hilarious character to date, because how much did he really get to do in The Hangover?

As The Campaign gets into full swing, it’s clear that this could potentially be the breakout comedy hit of the year, such is the style of humour that fills the trailer. It’s OTT but if you’re a Ferrell fan you know what you’re in for.

For those of you who are wondering about spoilers, you may well find a couple of things here that relinquish a few surprises from you, but nothing serious. You get a fairly standard set up, and knowing the basic premise of the movie, nothing is given away that you don’t already know from reading a blurb. Except perhaps a couple of jokes but even so, I’d say there is a lot more to be seen and hopefully laughed at than is given away in the trailer.

I am definitely going to be watching this come September!

Community Renewed

I hate clogging up your feed with news, but any additional coverage for the Season 4 renewal of one of my favourite ever TV shows deserves what tiny annoyance it causes anyone.

Game: Hell Yeah (2012)

There’s a good chance this trailer was directed by somebody’s Dad, because this is the least cool video I’ve ever seen that tried to pass itself off as such. I don’t think these guys properly get what their target demographic find funny, or maybe I’m just not in that group (doubtful, seeing as we spend the most money on games like this) because there’s something a bit Stilton about the whole thing. The PEGI 12 rating is a slap in the face too because I genuinely don’t think anyone above that age would appreciate watching it.

Not to take away from the actual game itself though, as from the brief glimpses we see it looks like it could be a cacophony of vibrant visuals and violent gameplay. Not exactly my type of game, but I know enough similar stuff out at the moment e.g Shank, Deathspank etc, that this would cater to a popular market. And let’s not forget SEGA are behind it, meaning this will either be brilliant or mediocre, nothing in between.

In terms of spoiling, this probably does the exact opposite; you barely get enough insight about what to expect, that it does question why they even bothered, especially as they didn’t get the humour right. Overall, this teaser is more of a HELL NAW! than a Hell Yeah.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) - A Proper Spoiler Review

Because every big movie trailer should have a spoiler review, my good friend David Allen wrote this up, and it’s brilliant. Enjoy!

Here is a trailer marketed straight at your action film fan. Explosions, fights quick scenes interspersed with one liners and cocky quips. Hey, it’s Batman, what did you expect?

Straight off the bat (oho!) we get to see who the main villain is and anyone who is a fan of the comics will be able to tell which storyline Nolan is running with. I’ve never read the comics but I know the story-arc, the trailer shows several clips from the most shocking scene of the story. The villain seems to be depicted differently from the books too, seemingly being made into another terrorist of the week.

The inclusion of new characters is thrown at us as the trailer gives them screen time to ‘Legolas’, and the directors show off all the other big names in short half second flashes. Nothing too spoilery there - it’s selling as opposed to storytelling.

On a final note anyone wanting to know what new gadgets the Bat has would do well to watch this. The main one, a certain vehicle, gets more screen time than some major characters - lets hope they sort out the cgi in the final cut, at the moment it looks like polished lego.

In short, bigger spoilers than the one on the back of the Batmobile.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Allow me to ramble for a little bit.

So, like many of you, The Dark Knight Rises has to be one of my most anticipated movies of the year. There’s just so much to look forward to and it’s coming out in approximately 80 days, so obviously people are talking about it, and with the third trailer’s release yesterday, it seems difficult to avoid conversation on the matter.

However, I’ve taken a personal decision not to watch any of the trailers or read any of the stories about this movie. It’s not that I don’t trust Christopher Nolan not to create a good teaser, and I’m absolutely positive that watching any of them would excite me, it’s just that in doing this site myself for the time being, this is the one movie I’ve decided I’d rather go and see knowing as little as possible about what happens. Experiencing the movie as it should be done.

I don’t yet know if I believe that trailers and movies can completely complement each other in the current form. Maybe if trailers only contained footage that wasn’t in the movie, it would help this (or it might hinder it) and I do like the concept, but would that work for, say, a comedy? I doubt it. There’s lots more to say on that matter, and that’s for another time.

For now, enjoy this TDKR trailer!

Prometheus (2012) - UK Trailer

WARNING! CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS! WARNING!

The whole world is excited about this movie right now, and for good reason. It’s bringing back a sub genre that’s been dormant of late (that is, if you’ll ignore this little gem) and will finally resurface this year, in what looks like a gloriously epic hit. Of course, I’m talking about intergalactic horror film Prometheus. They don’t come much slicker than this!

I’ve already previewed this over here, but now we have a full length trailer and it really does throw a lot of new information at you. However, this comes at a cost, with this taster seemingly giving away valuable plot elements, which I for one would rather have gone into the movie not knowing. I think the more discerning among you will be able to piece together a loose strand of the plot, and even those visceral folk like me will wonder why they’ve let slip a few of their secrets before you’ve even seen the damn thing. Our only hope is that Mr Ridley Scott has a lot more left to surprise us with, so I’m sure this will still be worth going to see. Just don’t watch the above if you’ve already booked your ticket!

This Is 40 (2012)

You know the old adage ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’? Well Judd Apatow is nowhere near broke, so he ain’t gonna fix this s**t.

Ok, that maybe a little harsh, and here’s a disclaimer; I’ve not actually seen all of The 40 Year Old Virgin (and I happen to be a fan of Steve Carrell’s) but I’ve slogged my way through Knocked Up and never really felt compelled to go see Funny People, so I can stand by my point. Films about the trials and tribulations of ‘normal folk’ can be great. However, I don’t think Apatow has quite nailed this formula nearly as well as those guys have, and so I find every film of his lacking somewhat. I know he has his fans, and this might well appeal to you guys, but for me I just can’t say this video excited me at all, it just seems so thuddingly dull. I even like the song he used, but here it feels shoehorned in probably because of the word ‘Young’ in the title, yet it just doesn’t feel appropriate in this context.

At the very least there really is nothing spoilery about this trailer. It sets up the story, it introduces you to the characters well enough to understand them (though doesn’t mean you have to like them) and props to Paul Rudd for anticipating my feelings on this trailer by mimicking my face throughout; shocked and bored at the same time. I hear ya.
